So on Sunday I decided it's finally time to clear some of the crap out of the back of the car, and I notice the carpet is rather wet. So I continue in taking everything and find this after lifting everything up. It was enough water that I had to bale it out with a cup before using a rag to sop up the rest of it.
The water was contained to just the rear hatch area, so I'm thinking the leak originates in the rear of the car.
Does anyone have a good method to finding where water is leaking in from?
*Edit: It's a 2000 Civic Hatch

What car?
I'd say take a look at the weatherstripping.
You can clean up the area and then take a hose to places that might be suspect.

A little brother, a flashlight, and a garden hose?
What are you driving? I'd closely inspect all of your hatch/trunk gasket rubber and your rear glass gasket. With time they crack and separate at the seams, and their bounce decreases to the point where they barely squish against the hatch, leaving gaps.Other than that, if you have any weep holes or drains, make sure they're clear.

Not familiar with the Civic, but a lot of cars have flapper vents in the rear hatch area to equalize pressure. They can get jammed open then you'll get splash up from the wheel wells so it won't leak normally until you drive through a big ass puddle. Usually an easy fix to clean the junk out and spray on some silicon lube. Usually they're near the front of the wheel well, but I've seen them other places as well.
Edit: normally behind the rear wheel well...head was on backwards....
